EDO 2024: Tinubu turns down Okpebholo's request for 'help' ahead of September election ... Says nation's economic woes, other national issues overwhelming

By Ehichioya Steve Odion

It is no longer news that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Monday Okpebholo in the company of Sen. Adams Oshiomhole and Minister of Niger Delta Abubakar Momoh and Okpebholo's running mate, Hon Dennis Idahosa, visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Aso Rock on Friday.  The Edo APC has been celebrating that visit in the social media space.

The news, however, is that the duo got the shock of their lives as the president was said to be unyielding to their request for him to assist with funding and other logistics in the processes leading to the September 21 Governorship poll in the State.

A source familiar with the visit hinted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu told them point blank that with the present economic and other numerous problems facing the country under his leadership, it would be difficult for him to be involved in the forthcoming Edo Governorship election.

Tinubu  reportedly called on the leadership of the APC in Edo State to close ranks with its party members and mobilise to campaign and sell their candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebholo to the electorate in Edo to give him victory in the forthcoming election.

Tinubu was also said to have advised that the Edo governorship election must be seen as a practical test of popularity of each of the various parties' candidates contesting the poll with level of acceptability by the people of Edo State.

Observers believe that the body language of President Tinubu suggests that he may not be well disposed to acting the script of the Edo APC as  regard to the guber poll.

It's no longer news  that the APC and its members in Edo State have been looking for a situation where their candidate, Okpebholo Monday will get victory and be sworn-in as governor of Edo State through the back door without the votes of Edo people.

However, Edo at home and in the Diaspora have declared their overwhelming support for Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie.

The emergence of the duo, they contend, marks a significant leap in the demand by Edo people for competent hands in the governance of the state since the advent of democracy in Nigeria, therefore, the unflinching support from Edo residents continues to grow on a daily basis for the duo of Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie.

Over the weekend the party (APC) suffered another heavy blow, when after misleading the public on the speculated nullification of the PDP primaries and its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, the Abuja FHC eventually released a certified true copy on the matter, without even touching on the PDP primaries and Asue Ighodalo candidacy.
The APC had since the release of the CTC buried its head in shame, a development that has caused them to run to President Tinubu, yet unable to secure an affirmative support statement from the President.

The falsehood peddled by the APC last Thursday further exposed the inadequacy, incompetence, irresponsibility and unpreparedness of the party and its candidate for the September election. It is a known fact that lies are their stock in trade.

This has further made Edo people to be more determined and resolved to fully support Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie across political divides, having discovered that a party built on lies and propaganda cannot be trusted  and be allowed to govern the state.

Therefore, having received the highest and unexpected disappointment from the Presidency, their hope has been shattered and it is clear to them that they will surely suffer a defeat come September 21 Edo election.
