Civil Societies Task Security Agencies, INEC on credible Election in Edo

By Ehichioya Odion Stephen

The Network of Civil Societies Organization of Nigeria ,  (NOCSON), has  raised concern over the last incident that occurred at the Airport Road, Benin City where a gallant police officer  Inspector, Onu Aku  was killed during the shooting  and several others injured  that day.

You will recall that the incident  was caused by the political imbroglio surrounding the court judgement and impeachment of the former deputy governor of Edo State, Hon. Phillip Shaibu.

The organization raised its concern today during the World press briefing by the President of the group, Comrade Ogbidi Emmanuel in Benin City.

Ogbidi regretted that twenty six days after the uncivilized display of the political class cum some thugs who were brandishing several guns and light weapons demonstrating in an action that could best be described as a  mini civil war, adding that until now the police force is yet to arrest those who were obviously visible in the eye of the cameras lenses that have since gone viral on various social media.

The group alleged that the police have resorted to turning their eyes away from the incident or sweeping same under the carpet, a development suggesting that the Nigeria police force were taking side with the ruling party at the center, promoting high level of impunity, selective arrest and prosecution of those alleged to have perpetuated those crime.

They  use the opportunity to draw the attention of the Nigeria Police Force  and other security agencies of  the impending risk if nothing is done urgently, the state will be sitting on a keg of gun powder and  allow those none state actors, political thugs whose faces were visible at the Airport Road shooting incident to continue to roam in the streets of Benin  this time of  the election seasonn in the state.

The group therefore called on the Inspector  General of Police, IGP , Kayode Egbetokun and other security agencies to arrest and prosecute all those involved irrespective of their political affiliations.

They called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,  to conduct free , fair and  credible election that will be acceptable globally.

"The election must be a deviation and of great improvement on the 2023 general  elections where BVAS was allegedly  manipulated and electronic transmission of results was  jettison at the eleventh hour owing to a purported technical glitch after spending billions of tax payers money on the project.

He praised INEC for the swift voter registration exercise conducted in Edo state and urged them  to ensure all PVCs and documents necessary for Edo voters to perform their civic responsibilities are made available so that no Edolite would be disenfranchised owing to the electoral umpire's inadequacies.
