The Governorship candidates of some political parties in the September 21 election who participated in the just concluded Independent Television and Radio governorship debate has jointly called on those politicians boasting to use federal power to subvert the will of the people to have a rethink and allow Edo people to vote and choose who becomes the governor.
They equally begged those planning to unleash violence on the electorate on election day to give peace a chance as politics is not a do or die affair, adding that there will not be development in a state of rancour.
They call on all stakeholders in the election, like INEC, Security Agents etc, to rise above board by giving all the political parties a level playing ground by being fair to all.
They particularly called on Edo people to reject the party that has brought hardship and suffering to the land through their votes.
On quality education that will impact positively on the children of the state, they opined that there is need to give the teachers all the necessary training that will build up their capacity to impart the right knowledge in the pupils.
They also see the need to motivate the teaching staff with appreciable salary in order to encourage them to do the work with satisfaction and enhance standard of learning in the class.
They said in order to encourage the children of the poor in Edo State there is need to introduce free education across board and pay bursary in the university.
On revenue generation to drive the economy of the state, they all agreed that bringing in investors to invest massively in the state can easily grow the economy and also reduce unemployment. They further said that through those businesses the state can realize more taxes to build other infrastructures.
Some of them saw the need to revive Bendel Brewery and other abandoned establishments in the state, which they say can yield billions of naira into government's coffer.
They all agreed that in the area of tourism Edo State has so much potentials to develop and earn good revenue for the state to carry out development.
They said above all, agriculture must take the center stage where they will go into food processing industries and produce in a large quantity and have enough to import to generate more profit.
In the area of insecurity, they agreed that a state that is not properly secured could face serious hunger as invaders will deprive farmers from accessing their farm land. They therefore vowed to invest in security to save our farmers and other citizens of the state.
The governorship candidates present at the debate were, African Action Congress, AAC, Oberaifo Udoh, Young Progressives Party, YPP, Okungbowa Paul Ovbokhan, African Democratic Congress, ADC, Derek Izedonmwen, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Isaiah Osifo, People Redemption Party, PRP, Patience Ndidi Ofure Key and New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Dr. Azemhe Azena.
In his vote of thanks and closing remarks, the Managing Director of Independent Television and Radio, Engr. Elvis Obaseki appreciated the governorship candidates for attending the debate.
" For you to take this bold step to do this, it means you are ready to serve the people of Edo State. We will remain your partner because we want to support the growth of the state. We are also looking forward to a peaceful election".
