Hardship: Charilove Foundation Cries Out, Seeks Government's Support

By Ehichioya Steve Odion

Charilove Foundation is a non profit organization envisioned to serve as Pathfinder, a pace setter and demonstration center for societal education, skill acquisition and moral/ ethical orientation outfit for children and youths living with disabilities and special challenges.

These  were the exact words of Chris Omusi,  Servant Leader Project Charilove when he briefed journalists  at the foundation building  in Benin City on Monday.

The primary target group are those who despite their disabilities have the capacity to learn  and, so should not be left behind  or allowed waste away as though they were prisoners or outcasts and beggars on the streets

He said  the foundation has been struggling since 1990, as it was like a taboo to identify with the physically challenged persons, adding that they took it upon themselves to ensure people learn how to accommodate such persons.

Omusi appealed to the government to improve on the infrastructure at the St Lucy Primary School which was established in 1923. He said they should make sure  they empower  dominants of the Leprosy Center in Ogan Community, Orhionmwon local government area.

He called on governments at all levels to  assist to properly fund the foundation as it  has been underfunded before now. He added  that in recent times the government has turned  Charilove Foundation as a dumping ground as they bring all manner  of persons  with disabilities.

Continuing, he called on all the relevant agencies of government to visit the Oshiomo, Leprosy Center to ascertain its standard and explore ways to support the center. He said the people presently there live in misery  as their suffering is much.

He particularly drew  the attention of the government to the soup kitchen in the Foundation which he said is now difficult to operate due to the high cost of food prices. " We want the government to quickly intervene. The money they  are bringing to support the foundation  is no longer realistic.

He however, said he was not against any government , but craves good and acceptable electoral process that can bring in good leaders who have empathy for the suffering masses.

Omusi  thanked the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Edo State Council, Dr Festus Alenkhe for leading the Edo journalists to the news briefing. He equally praised him  for his infrastructural development at the press center and wished him well
