The NEC of the National Labour Congress, NLC, has strongly condemned the recent allege actions of the police and the governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo in orchestrating an invasion of the Edo NLC State Council Secretariat .
They described the action as a brazen act of impunity, including the ransacking of properties and the unlawful removal of items, all in a bid to impose an illegitimate leadership on the workers.
The NEC therefore, resolved to give the Edo State government and the police a deadline of 14 working days, up to January 8, 2025 to vacate the Secretariat premises, return all confiscated properties to the Congress and refrain from further interference in trade Union activities. They warned that failure to comply will compel the Congress to initiate unprecedented measures in defense of workers and trade Union rights.
This was disclosed today by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Edo State Council Comrade Odion Olaye while briefing journalists in Benin City.
Olaye said this was part of the communique issued and signed by Comrade Joe Ajaero , President and Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja Esq. General Secretary at the union National Executive Council NEC meeting held on Wednesday, 18, 2024 in Owerri, Imo State.
He said he has proof of the invasion and ransacking of Edo State NLC council, adding that he remains the state chairman of Edo NLC. He also said that he was elected on the 7th of March, 2023 and his tenure will end on March 6, 2027.
Comrade Olaye also made available to us a letter sent to all Affiliate Unions titled "Addressing Unauthorized Activities By Some Affiliate Union Members In Edo State" signed by Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, Esq.
In the letter, the union said it has come to their knowledge that some officers of affiliate Unions in Edo State are parading themselves as new officers of Congress, adding that this behavior constitutes a clear act of indiscipline and crude brigandage.
The union therefore urge all Affiliate Unions to ensure that none of their members are involved in such an affront against Congress.
" Meanwhile, investigations are on to ascertain the real identities of these characters".
Another letter from Amalgamated Union Of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical And Recreational Services Employees ( AUPCTRE) sent to Comrade Joman Bernard who is a bonafide member and who purportedly take over the leadership of Edo NLC was equally made available to Journalists.
